Female Sando Komainu (Stone Korean Temple Dog) abt 1712 |
Description |
Smiling female dog, one of pair of Sando Komainu (Stone Korean dogs pre 1712) from Nara, Japan that were purchased by John T. Morris from Yamanaka & Co., an antique dealer based in Japan with offices in Boston, New York, Paris and elsewhere. Yamanaka & Co. specialized in Japanese and Chinese material. Antique dealer's photograph is included. The tutelaries were placed in the Japanese Overlook Garden in the English Park in 1912, presumably by Muto in consultation with John Morris and Frank Gould. Excerpt from Catalog of Article #2 Owned by J.T.M. and L.T.M.... # 469 Stone Dogs 1 pair Purchased June 1912 from Yamanaka & Co Boston who stated that they were a very superior pair and came from a Temple at Nara and were over 200 years old. This latter date was confirmed by Muto the gardener who was working with us when they came. His opinion was based upon certain signs he recognized. Cost [unk] They are certainly very good and rare in design and condition. Photos: 2004.1.235-.236 |
