Gates Hall circa 1975 |
CATALOG NUMBER |
2004.1.681 |
Description |
Gates Hall with glass porch, two cars parked in front. Notes: Originally called "Overlea," Gates Hall was built as a private residence for Mr. David Pepper and his family in 1893 and was not part of the Morris estate. Designed by Wilson Eyre Jr., a well known residential architect of the time. The window variations, classical motifs and steeped-pitch roofs were typical of Eyre’s work. In 1948 Overlea was purchased by the Arboretum and re-named for Thomas Sovereign Gates, the University of Pennsylvania President who was instrumental in establishing the Arboretum. Trimwork has been painted light color. A mature conifer stands to left of porch. |
