Description |
Fireplace tiles and carved wood mantel frieze in room of Compton mansion. The carving on the wood frieze above tiles depicts an open book inscribed with these words on facing pages: Cedar Grove, A.D. 1774 [left] and Compton, A.D. 1887 [right]. Notes: Compton floorplan indicates this fireplace was in the first floor study on right at back of hallway.The tiles are from Minton China Works, Stoke-on-Trent, England. Engraved by Lewis Thomas Swetnam, circa 1885. Engravings are based on 5th volume of Picturesque Europe, published by Cassell, Petter & Galpin, London, 1875. Tiles depict (left to right) "The West Gate Warwick," "Old Houses Rouen," "Rodez Cathedral," "Cowgate Foot Edinburgh." See 1988.1.112 for photo of room after tiles were removed prior to demolition.
