Description |
Compton Mansion room with corner fireplance and antique furniture. Notes: Compton floorplan indicates this was small second floor room on right at back of hallway. Believed to be Lydia Morris's sitting room. Fireplace surround tiles designed by William Wise for Minton China Works, Stoke on Trenton, England, circa 1880. Tile series titled "Country Pursuits" depicts young women doing farm chores. Dressing table made by John Head for Catherine Johnson Wistar circa 1726 in front of fireplace. A Chippendale style chair attributed to James Gillingham to left, ladderback chair with foot stool to right. A lithograph is above the fireplace and round framed cherub is to the left. A flask bottle, covered urn and 2 vases are sitting on the mantle shelf. A tasselled curtain hangs on the window to the right of the fireplace. Dressing table and Chippendale chair donated to Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1928. Compton Architect: Theophilus P. Chandler, Jr. Constructed 1888; demolished 1968. |
