Description |
Side of Gates Hall. Open veranda. Mature tree and shrub in foreground. Note: Originally called "Overlea," the house was built as a private residence for Mr. David Pepper and his family in 1893. Designed by Wilson Eyre Jr., a well known residential architect of the time. The ceiling beams and staircase were typical of Eyre’s work. In 1948 Overlea was purchased by the Arboretum and the house re-named for Thomas Sovereign Gates, the University of Pennsylvania President who was instrumental in establishing the Arboretum. |
