Title People in the Rose Garden - John Schnell Graduation 1926
Description People in the Rose Garden - 1926. In 1924 the formal rose garden and rock wall were built, replacing the mixed garden that was laid out in 1888.

Notes from Ruth Anne Rude:
Photos were probably taken at the time of John Schnell's graduation from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School Class of 1926.
Harry Schnell, John's father, lived at 9411 Stenton Avenue, across Stenton Avenue from the Morris Arboretum. John lived at Mary and Sue Rex's home as a boarder while attending Penn. The Rex house was on Gravers Lane, Chestnut Hill. John's older brother Julius also lived there and attended Temple University. After graduation Julius worked for a Chestnut Hill bank.

Notes from Ruth Anne Rude:
My father, John Schnell and his older brothers, Julius, Lewis and Henry, lived in Philadelphia, then moved to Royal Avenue in Glenside (about 1905-1912). Then their parents Harry and Lottie Schnell bought the old Central Hotel in Flourtown (later Halligan's Pub) on Bethlehem Pike. They ran the hotel and started the first Ford Agency, which they operated until 1919 when Mrs. Schnell and her son Henry died of the flu. Harry Schnell moved to 9411 Stenton Ave and later married Mattie.
After graduation from the Wharton School, John worked as a manager for Crean Brothers Coal Company, [18th St. Below Porter,] Philadelphia until the 1970's. In 1929 John married Ruth Slifer, a 1925 graduate of Temple University and they lived in Glenside at 427 and then 417 Limekiln Pike on the Heist Estate Farm - Ruth Slifer's family home. Fred and Ruth Anne (Schnell) Rude raised their family at 417 with John and Ruth from 1963 to 1997 when John died and 2001 when Ruth died.
