|Title||Lydia's Seat - Harshberger Photos 1925|
Lydia's seat and fountain in the Rose Garden, photographed by Dr. Harshberger, Professor of Botany, University of Pennsylvania in 1925
A 1910 payment of $771.50 for the "Garden Steps, Wall & Seat" that we know as Lydia's Seat appears in the account ledger for Compton. The "Blue Pool" was added later. The rustic seat was installed in the Formal Garden that predates the Rose Garden and Rock Wall terrace dug into the hillside (1924). The seat and stairs were a favorite garden approach and prospect along the path down the hill from the Mansion to the mixed flower, kitchen and herb formal gardens that preceded the Rose Garden. The view today is just as special, but a bit more secret.
